Family Planning for End-of-Life Care: Navigating Difficult Conversations
Discussing end-of-life matters can be an uncomfortable and emotionally challenging experience for everyone involved. It’s never easy to think about the time when a loved one will no longer be with us. However, these conversations are crucial, and having them sooner rather than later can make decision-making easier and help ensure that the final days and weeks are as enjoyable as possible.
So, how do you initiate these essential discussions?
Starting the Conversation
Breaking the ice is often the most challenging part of any project, and planning for end-of-life is no exception. Once you’ve taken that first step, you’ll likely find that the conversation becomes much more manageable.
Whenever possible, gather all relevant individuals together to discuss the matter at one time and place. If circumstances allow, consider arranging a meeting during a holiday gathering. If an in-person conversation isn’t feasible, schedule a group call or an online conference call. Alternatively, a detailed email can be an effective method, as it provides a documented record that helps minimize confusion.
Regardless of the communication method you choose, what’s most important is that you engage in the conversation and explore potential options for hospice care.
Key Points to Address
Ensure you cover all major issues during your discussion, which should include at least the following points:
- The location and contents of the will
- Life insurance policies
- End-of-life medical care
- Advance directives, such as DNRs (do not resuscitate orders), ventilators, etc.
- Power of attorney
Going Forward
After addressing legal and practical matters, take some time to consider how you’d like to spend the remaining time with your loved ones. This might involve engaging in favorite activities, reminiscing about happy memories through scrapbooks and photo albums, and expressing your feelings to one another.
